Caramel

Caramel is a warm, funny and poignant film about love, sex and marriage. Set in a bustling beauty salon, it features five different but intriguing Lebanese women who regularly meet to confide in each other, in between haircuts and sugar waxing with caramel.

One of the film’s biggest strengths is the startlingly natural performance that oozes through the pores of each of its central characters, none of whom except lead actress, co-writer and first-time director Nadine Labaki, had ever appeared in front of a camera before.

Caramel certainly has the appeal of the light-hearted chick flick, but Labaki also dips into the experiences of women living in a constraining society and makes this salon – where they offload and support each other – their safe haven.
